Guidance Services at Orange Charter School include:
1. Individual and Small Group Counseling- School counseling is generally short term and focuses on a specific need or issue. Groups are determined by parent and teacher feedback and generally meet for 30 minutes once a week.
2. High School Planning- 8th graders are introduced to a variety of tools to gather information about skills and interests. They use this information to determine high school choice and electives.
3. Guidance Curriculum- Guidance lessons on problem solving, empathy, impulse control, personal safety, and managing strong feelings are taught K-12. Guidance curriculum is meant to be a universal prevention program focused on reducing aggression and promoting social competence. Skills developed promote children's helathy social, emotional, and academic development. Guidance lessons take place once per week in grades K-5 and twice monthly in grades 6-8.
4. Consulting and Referral services- Mrs. Apelgren is available to observe behavior, answer questions or provide referrals to community services as needed.
5. System Support- Mrs. Apelgren acts in support of children by involvement in a variety of other aspects of school operation.
Guidance Services at Orange Charter School are provided by Mrs. Kim Apelgren. Mrs. Apelgren is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame ( BA Psychology) and St. Edwards University (MA Counseling) and moved to North Carolina in 2008. Mrs. Apelgren has served as School Counselor since 2009. Mrs. Apelgren lives in HIllsborough with her husband and two children.
